uPVC Door Repair vs Replace Cost | The Ten-Year Maths

Full cost breakdown: repairing a uPVC door gearbox and cylinder twice a decade versus full replacement. Real prices, a clear table, honest advice.

A new uPVC door costs somewhere between £800 and £1,800 fitted in MK11. A gearbox service and a decent cylinder costs around £120 to £180. Those two numbers are basically the whole argument, but let me show you the maths properly.

Most homeowners in Stony Stratford, Wolverton, or Old Stratford replace their uPVC door because it's stiff, it won't lock on the first try, or the handle sags. None of those faults require a new door. They require a locksmith and about ninety minutes.

What Actually Wears Out

A uPVC door is three separate things: the frame and slab (lasts twenty-five years easily), the multipoint locking gearbox (GU, Fuhr, Maco, Winkhaus, or Mila, typically good for ten to fifteen years with any lubrication at all), and the cylinder (Yale, ERA, Avocet ABS, or Ultion, which you should probably upgrade every five to eight years anyway for security reasons).

The frame rarely fails. The glass unit occasionally mists over. The gearbox wears out. The cylinder gets tired or compromised.

When people call me saying "the door's had it," nine times in ten the frame is fine and the gearbox is the problem. Sometimes it's just dry as a bone and needs a strip-down, clean, and regrease. Sometimes the gearbox has snapped internally and needs replacing. Either way, it's not a door problem.

The Numbers Side by Side

ScenarioTypical costLifespan boughtCost per year
New uPVC door (mid-range, fitted)£1,100 to £1,50020-25 years£44 to £75
New uPVC door (budget, fitted)£800 to £1,00010-15 years£53 to £100
Gearbox replacement (parts + labour)£95 to £1608-12 years£8 to £20
Cylinder upgrade to TS007 3-star (e.g. Ultion)£65 to £95 fitted7-10 years£7 to £14
Full service: gearbox + cylinder, done twice in a decade£280 to £510 total10 years£28 to £51

Do that twice a decade and you've kept a sound door running for £280 to £510. Buy a budget replacement door and you're back to the same conversation in twelve years, having spent over a grand.

The one caveat: if your frame is rotten at the cill, the door slab is warped so badly the locks won't engage even after adjustment, or the hinges have pulled the frame out of square and no amount of adjustment fixes it, then yes, replace it. That's probably fifteen percent of the calls I attend where someone thinks they need a new door.

What Drives the Repair Cost Up

A few things push gearbox jobs toward the top of that range.

  • Brand matters. GU and Fuhr parts are widely stocked. Some obscure old Lockmaster mechanisms take a day to source.
  • The cylinder spec you choose. A basic BS3621 euro cylinder is £20 to £35. An Ultion or Avocet ABS TS007 3-star is £55 to £80 on its own. Worth paying, but it's a choice.
  • Whether the door needs adjustment at the same time. Hinge packs, keep plate repositioning, and frame packing add thirty to sixty minutes.
  • Emergency callout timing. A Sunday evening in Deanshanger or Hanslope costs more than a Tuesday afternoon job in Stony Stratford itself.

The Security Argument for Doing It Properly

While you're paying for the gearbox, upgrade the cylinder. A standard euro cylinder on a uPVC door in Galley Hill or Fullers Slade is a one-minute job for a snapper. An Ultion or Avocet ABS with anti-snap, anti-pick, and anti-drill isn't. The SS312 Diamond standard is the benchmark. You won't find that protection in a budget replacement door unless you specifically specify it and pay extra.

Repairing the gearbox and fitting a TS007 3-star cylinder on the same visit means you leave with a door that works properly and is harder to attack than it was before. A straight swap for a cheap replacement door gets you neither.

Spend the Money Sensibly

Get a locksmith to look at the door before you call a window company. If the gearbox is the problem, fix the gearbox. If the cylinder is a dated brass pin tumbler, replace it with something that meets SS312. Budget roughly £150 to £250 for a proper gearbox-and-cylinder job, factor in the same again around year seven or eight, and your existing door will outlast most of what the budget end of the replacement market is offering.

Questions people actually ask

Almost certainly not. A dropping handle usually means the gearbox spindle is worn or the handle fixings have loosened. A gearbox swap costs £95 to £160 fitted. The only exception is if the spindle has sheared inside the door slab itself, which occasionally happens on older doors, but even then it's a door slab repair not a full replacement.
